Dave Anderson is a saxophonist and composer who brings a significant musical voice to the jazz scene. Proficient on all the members of the saxophone family, Anderson has performed around North America with notable musicians including Clark Terry, Gene Bertoncini, Jim McNeely, Matt Wilson, Craig Taborn, Nick Brignola and Mel Torme. Although he plays in a modern style, Anderson has received accolades from jazz legends including Ray Brown and Rufus Reid. Increasingly Anderson has focused on composing original music for projects such as The Dave Anderson Quartet, and his Trio Real. Trio Real, Anderson's second CD, follows the quartet CD Clarity, which released one year earlier, enjoying two months on the Jazzweek national jazz radio chart (peaking in the top 25) and receiving enthusiastic reviews worldwide. Both recordings feature Anderson’s original compositions and arrangements.
Anderson began playing the horn at age eleven as altoist in the school band in his hometown of Cloquet, Minnesota. Initially inspired by listening to the jazz recordings of his older brother, Anderson sought out educational experiences for playing music, and began writing original compositions while in high school. He was named outstanding high school soloist at the Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival and outstanding college soloist at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival. Upon graduating from the University of Minnesota, he received a full fellowship to perform at the Aspen Music Festival. Dave then spent ten years in and around the New York City music scene, including two years working in the music industry under legendary producer Creed Taylor.
Anderson lived in Seattle from 2005 to 2011, playing with groups such as the Jay Thomas Big Band, and the Emerald City Jazz Orchestra (ECJO) in addition to performing and recording two CDs on Pony Boy Records with his own original music projects. In Seattle, Anderson found himself in demand on all four major voices of the saxophone family (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones) and performed all five saxophone chairs in big bands such as the ECJO.
With the release of the Trio Real CD, Anderson has moved from the Seattle area, where the recording was made, to Brooklyn, where he will lend his composing and performing talents to the New York jazz scene.
