Saxophonist and composer Dave Anderson brings a significant musical voice to the New York jazz scene...
Anderson has performed on all the instruments in the saxophone family around North America with notable musicians including Clark Terry, Jim McNeely, Matt Wilson, Craig Taborn, Jay Thomas and Mel Torme. Although he plays in a modern style, Anderson has received accolades from jazz legends including Ray Brown and Rufus Reid. Increasingly Anderson has focused on composing original music for his bands such as The Dave Anderson Quartet, Trio Real and Blue Innuendo.
Anderson began playing the horn at age eleven as alto saxophonist in the school band in his hometown of Cloquet, Minnesota. Initially inspired by listening to the jazz recordings of his older brother, Anderson sought out educational experiences for playing music, and began writing original compositions while still in high school. He was named outstanding high school solosist at the Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival and outstanding college soloist at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival. Upon graduating from the University of Minnesota, he received a full fellowship to perform at the Aspen Music Festival in a student ensemble including future jazz notables Clarence Penn, Scott Whitfield and Ryan Kisor. Dave has spent over a decade in and around the New York City music scene, including two years working in the music industry under legendary producer Creed Taylor.
"Clarity," Anderson's lauded debut 2010 recording as a leader on Pony Boy Records, documented Anderson's Seattle working quartet, where he lived and performed from 2005-2011. "Dave Anderson's Trio Real," a pared-down group of primarily saxophones, acoustic bass and drums exploring the relationship of jazz, funk and rock, was released on Pony Boy in 2011.
Released in 2016, "Blue Innuendo" is Anderson's first New York City recording as a bandleader on his new imprint Label 1, featuring a cast of leading jazz musicians: organist Pat Bianchi, guitarist Tom Guarna and drummer Matt Wilson.
